Glass Sculptures, a gift of love to Mom, Dad, and the grandparents, for lovers too
Sculpture is a plastic art, and art that fills space like no other art. Music certainly surrounds us, and there is some sense of dimensionality in music, but music generally proceeds from some specific point in space and emanates from there to surround us. Poetry is encompassing sound too, and can lift us up to emotional heights with imagination, but, like music, presses in on our senses and obtrudes into our minds. But sculpture, somewhat like drama with its sets and actors, by its being there in three dimensional space, holds a closer relation to the natural, to the material world, giving us a sense of being present before something rooted in our own world of place and time, a sense of being in the very subject's presence. Thus, sculpture, imparts a livingness that most other arts do not.
We think of most sculpture as being chiseled stone or fashioned bronze, or some material that will withstand the onslaught of ages, that stands up against sand and wind, that will be there a thousand years later, the figure it represents somehow maintaining its presence even beyond death. If we should desire that kind of longevity, then by all means, sculptures in marble and bronze are what we want. And yet, the very material robs the sculptures of that delicacy and tenderness that some sculptures should possess. If we are willing to give up that cold but lasting stone, with glass sculptures it is possible to obtain that delicacy, fragility, even intricacy that goes with our subjects but that other materials diminish.
Glass sculptures, being made of glass, possess that ethereal quality we so often associate with beauty and delicacy, that definite and yet ephemeral form that gives it an airiness, a lightness like a cloud of every shifting yet never departing form, lines as edges of light, now here, now there, with sparkles dazzling and mysterious as the surrounding light changes. Glass sculptures can take on any form, and can easily be made to represent a person's body, face, yes, even a loved one. The beauty of glass sculptures can be enhanced with multiple color glass, soft pink for the skin, golden ribbons of hair cascading along a cheek, over a delicate shoulder, delicate, wispy yet crystalline arms and legs, with smooth or ruffled robes, flowing as if the statue itself rose from the summer stream. Glass sculptures are able to communicate qualities no stone or bronze could ever suggest.
An artisan, more properly, an artist in glass can blow out a glass statue of any size, even to the near exact proportion of someone you love. These artist can be found in those cities renowned for their artists communities, in enclaves of artists along the Seine, in tourist cities, in the workshops of artist malls, such as the one in Carmel in California where the most exquisite glass statues are made from scratch before the public eye. If you want to make a present to your wife, your husband, your lover, to your Mom or Dad who adore your form, your face, or you want to give grandma and granddad a three dimensional representation of you, your spouse and your child, consider glass sculptures of the family in place of that all too common family portrait. It will be their delightful and joy for years to come.
