I'm getting ready to homeschool my oldest child starting in the fall. That means I'm busy gathering the necessary materials to fulfill the state curriculum standards, and am also stocking up on various supplies that we'll need, such as notebooks, pens, pencils, markers, and crayons. On one of my trips to the office supply store, I picked up a magnetic bulletin board and am glad they had this alternative to the traditional cork models.
There are several reasons that a magnetic bulletin board is superior to the old style. First of all, it's much easier and safer to use magnets to attach photos, papers, notices, and announcements to these boards than to have to use thumbtacks or pushpins. With young children in the house, I certainly don't want to have to worry about dropping a tack and having one of the kids pick it up and swallow it! Second, you don't damage the original documents when attaching them with magnets. For instance, I love posting photos of the kids, but hate having to put little holes in them in order to do so because I end up ruining a perfectly good picture that way. And finally, a magnetic bulletin board is just much more fun for kids to use. All kids are intrigued by magnets, and mine are no different. They can occupy themselves for hours arranging and rearranging everything on one of these boards, which of course makes me happy.
For many of these same reasons, a magnetic bulletin board would be perfect in an office setting, too. In that kind of environment it can be even more important to preserve the integrity of certain documents by not poking the corners full of holes, so I imagine these things would be pretty popular in the business world.
Teachers could probably get a lot of mileage out of having a magnetic bulletin board in their classroom as well. Kids are naturally curious and love to touch whatever is posted walls and boards, so it doesn't take too long before a paper or photograph gets ripped from the pushpin and ends up dangling by a single corner. This problem is largely eliminated with a magnetic bulletin board, so everything stays looking nice, neat, and organized for much longer. Plus, these boards come in a variety of styles and designs, making it a simple matter to add a touch of pizzazz to otherwise boring classroom decor.
Anyway, I'm not sure how my homeschooling efforts will go this fall, but I'm definitely excited about getting started. Although I don't have any formal training as a teacher, preparation is key -- and I think I'm going about that part the right way. I've studied the curriculum, outfitted my home with the proper supplies, and am bringing a positive attitude to the table. Here's hoping everything works out for the best!
