Affordable Housing

It happened to my family. Suddenly, my husband lost his job and we were forced to survive on my measly income. We couldnt afford a large majority of our bills anymore, including our rent. Forced to make a decision, we suddenly found ourselves looking for affordable housing. Luckily, some people in our community directed us to some apartments in another neighborhood that offered affordable housing to families with a limited income. I always thought of those housing facilities as being low class. I couldnt believe that I was being forced to live with other low income families. I admit it; I had a horrible and very misinformed perception of the inhabitants of those complexes. I quickly changed my mind when I toured one of the affordable housing communities. These werent low class individuals. The families that I saw were welcoming, intelligent and simply lacking a decent income just like my family.

We moved into the apartment complex without any hesitations. In fact, our new apartment was larger than our old one and offered some wonderful community facilities that we had not had the luxury of having before. Suddenly, the lower rent each month eased a huge burden off of our shoulders. We were able to slowly climb out of our financial distress that we had found ourselves buried in. Granted, we werent heading towards being wealthy, but we didnt feel so overwhelmed anymore. The most important thing for a family a safe and stable environment, was suddenly exactly that safe and stable. We didnt fear getting kicked out on the streets. We were content.

Finding affordable housing isnt a difficult task. Contact some state or county agencies in your state to get in contact with some facilities that may be places of interest to you. There are quite a few apartment and housing communities that you may drive past every single day and not have any idea that they are for families with limited incomes. Sure, some of those housing communities may not be filled with luxuries and definitely look like low income facilities but that just means you need to keep looking. Just like looking for any forms of housing you arent going to find exactly what youre looking for at the very first place you visit. Look in a different neighborhood for other affordable housing options. In some areas, there are waiting lists. With the economy in shambles in quite a few cities, more and more families are finding that they have a great need for affordable housing. Dont wait until youre almost living on the streets to start your search. If theres a waiting list for a particular
complex or community get your name on it. You need to be proactive and keep your familys best interest in mind.

Affordable housing communities exist for people with limited incomes. Ideally, it isnt a permanent situation but for some households, it is a very long term fact of life. Those communities exist, thanks to the government, in order to allow families to live normal lifestyles without being homeless or getting kicked out of other high rent apartments or houses on a regular basis. Make sure that you do some homework and become familiar with the income guidelines before you start a serious search for affordable housing. There are limitations and they are closely regulated annually. Do yourself a favor and check into those communities; they just be an answer to prayer and the beginning of a more stable lifestyle for your household.
