Laser Eye Surgery is a Good Option, if You Are Willing
My father has had horrible vision for most of his adult life, so when he first heard about laser eye surgery, he was very excited. There was anxiety as well, because of the prospect of a laser beam going into his eye, but he thought it would be a great way to regain his former 20/20 vision from his childhood.
He went to see a doctor about the possibility, and had very good feedback, so he decided to go through with it, and after a few days of avoiding direct sunlight, he said his vision was absolutely perfect and he was very glad he had done the laser eye surgery, because now he no longer had to worry about corrective lenses or contacts.
I have a friend who also has very poor vision, so I decided that I would let him know about laser eye surgery and how it could help him. He said that he would look into it, but did not seem that interested, and I was kind of surprised.
I was talking to him a few weeks later, and he told me he had already heard about it before I had mentioned it to him, and said he did not think he could ever go through with it. I asked him why, and he told me that he could not imagine anything going into his eye, and his biggest fear was that something would go wrong and he would be blinded for life.
I told him that laser eye surgery was considered to be very safe and said he may want to reconsider. It appeared to be a very sensitive issue with him, so I decided to drop the subject. I spoke to his wife, and she told me she had tried to convince him on a number of occasions to get the surgery, but he was just adamant that he would not.
A few months later, after what I an only imagine was constant pestering from his wife, my friend decided to go through with the surgery, or at least he tried. He got to the hospital, and was so distressed he could not go through with the surgery. It had to be delayed, and eventually he decided to have it canceled.
I have known many people that have had laser eye surgery, and I have never heard of a negative incident resulting from the procedure. Everyone that I have talked to about the surgery told me it was the greatest decision that they ever made. For my friend, however, it was a terrifying prospect and something he could never bring himself to do. While I think it is a good option for people with sight problems, I respect my friend's decision, too.
