One mistake that you can make is to assume that your doctor is a good person. Don't get me wrong, most of them are great people who dedicate their lives to helping others, and they save lives all of the time. However, for every fifty good doctors, there are a few bad ones lurking around. You should not have to worry about a doctor background checks when you go see a new doctor, but you should consider getting one done if something does not seem right or you do not like how things are going. If you feel uneasy about your care or the care of your children by a doctor, you have to use caution.
If you have never felt uneasy or unsure about your doctor, no need to go out and see about doctor background checks. Most that are in the medical profession do so because they started out wanting to help people, not hurt them. There are doctors that use their position to hurt people, however, and if you happen to run into one, you want to know it. When something feels off with anyone in your life, doctor, nurse, teacher, gardener, etc., you have the right to make sure they are who they say they are for your own protection. That is when the background check should be used.
There have been cases where doctors have used their position of trust to hurt children. One doctor gave a large number of girls under the age of eight vaginal exams for no reason. Those children should have never been left alone with any doctor without a parent present, but people assume they can trust their doctors and they don't question such things. It only takes a few bad ones to ruin it for everyone, and that is why there are doctor background checks now. You may not find anything if they have yet to be caught, but you may see warning signs that something is not right and that you should find a new doctor as soon as possible.
You might assume that if a doctor has done something wrong that they would no longer be able to practice medicine, but that is not always true. Some lie about things, set up their own office, and no one seems to think to check them out. Some get off on a technicality, move somewhere new, and continue to do what got them into trouble in the first place. Whatever the case, some slip through the cracks. Doctor background checks will bring up past problems and then you can decide if you want to continue to see them or not.
Some warning signs that you may want to do some doctor background checks are often things you may notice done differently elsewhere. Any time there is a child in with a doctor, the parent should be admitted. If you are asked to step out, ask why, and then take your child somewhere else. If you are subjected to a personal exam without a nurse present, get out and don't go back. Anything that makes you uneasy or does not seem normal is a sign that something may be wrong. Most doctors are honest and just want to help, but a few take advantage. Don't let them take advantage of you.
