How to Make the Most of Singing Auditions

Many singers out there dream of one day joining a band. Perhaps it is a cover band that plays music that you could hear on the jukebox or on the radio. For some it is original music and for others it is classical music like opera. Whatever style of music that you prefer, singers should know how to prepare thoroughly to make the most of their singing auditions. Singing auditions are mandatory when joining any group, whether established or fledgling. The more established and professional a group or project is, the tougher the singing auditions will be. There are a lot of talented, professional singers out there and they all want to be a part of something successful.

For beginners who want to get into a popular music group and feel that they have the talent to make it, there are several options for finding singing auditions. Craigslist has a Musicians forum section in every major city and many countries and you can just go online and search through their postings. Many groups will post an ad saying that they are seeking a vocalist and give a general or detailed description of the type of music they play or what their influences are. Generally singers are invited to reply by sending an email with some information about themselves.

It is recommended for singers to get their own musicians website on MySpace as a starting point. Vocalists can record themselves singing either a cappella or with a band and they can post the actual recordings onto the MySpace musicians site. These are personal sites and you can post several songs, original or covers, as well as photos and videos if you so desire. These sites are great to have when you respond to the bands looking for singers. You just give them the url address of your personal site which usually look like this: www.myspace.com/artistname. Bands or show producers can then quickly look and listen and rule out anyone that does not fit the profile they are looking for.

Assuming the band or producer likes what they see and hear on your site you will be given a date and time for singing auditions. For bands this will usually be at their rehearsal studio. You may have to bring your own microphone but usually they have one ready for you. Established professional bands will not give you much time and probably not more than two or three songs and maybe not even complete songs before they politely (hopefully) usher you out and bring in the next auditioning singer. If you are very good they may keep you on for a little longer, but most of the time they keep to a tight schedule of auditions and wont let you know how you did until the next day or later when they are through listening to everyone.

If all goes exceptionally well at singing auditions, then you will receive that magical call in a few days asking you if you want the gig. That is always a great day and you need to celebrate and give yourself a much deserved pat on the back for a job well done.
