How many people out there get nervous at the prospect of singing in public even though they sound great in the shower when they are all alone? Stage fright is very common and all in all a very sensible reaction when faced with going out and possibly making a fool of yourself in public. The main reason people freak out at auditions or when they perform in public, even if it is just a friendly neighborhood Karaoke session, is that they do not have the confidence that comes with experience. It may seem like an obvious statement but that confidence of performing in front of strangers or even people you know will only come with time and repetition. The more you do it, the more comfortable you will feel.
If you have some talent and have been recognized for it then you are a few steps ahead. Be warned however that most people that think they can sing actually cannot and should probably stop before they begin. It is a common fact that most people cannot hear themselves and many people have the opposite problem to lack of self-confidence which is that they are deluding themselves. This happens for a variety of reasons and one of them is that family members will tell them they are great singers in order not to hurt their feelings. We have all seen American Idol audition shows and while some may laugh at these poor deluded people, it just makes me sad because this is all too common.
One way of getting an honest opinion is to take voice lessons from a reputable voice coach or vocal teacher. Singing for beginners always begins with some solid lessons. One way to check and see if your teacher is any good is to have them sing for you and maybe a couple of friends of yours. Even if you cannot tell, your friends should be able to tell you if they suck or not. Find out if they have ever performed or if they have ever recorded and dont be afraid to ask to hear those recordings. Most vocal teachers that are any good will have a website where you can hear their recordings and get a rundown of their teaching techniques and curriculum.
A great way to learn singing for beginners is to learn to play an instrument. Guitar or piano are the recommended instruments to learn since they are rather easy to learn. They are also instruments that leave your mouth free. Learning an instrument is a great way to learn to hear the notes, which is very important. Singing for beginners can be much easier when you already have a musical background or can identify musical notes and tablature. A formal music education is very important and most experts will encourage parents to get their children into classes at an early age. Children are beginning at younger and younger ages as new teaching techniques are invented.
Singing for beginners does not have to be a nerve-wracking affair and the more you do it, the more comfortable you will be about performing. Pretty soon, with enough determination, training and talent, beginning singers will find themselves enjoying all the rewarding benefits of performing music in front of public audiences.
