Help With Home Water Conservation

If you want to work on doing what is right for the environment, you can start by doing simple things that start at home in making a difference. Each little thing that you do, and what the next person does, all add up to keeping our world in better shape, and even righting some of the wrongs from the past. One thing that you and your family can do is to work at home water conservation. This helps the environment in many ways, and also helps you cut down on your water bill. This also helps when there is drought so there is not quite as big a drain on the system as there could be.

One way to make sure you are not using too much water is to put a brick the tank on your toilet, and all toilets in your home. This lessens the amount of water that fills up and then is used to flush your toilets. This can go a long way towards home water conservation in any home. If you are going to replace your toilets any time soon, make sure you buy lower flow toilets. They use less in the tank and still flush just as well. You have water, and you also save money on your water bill.

Home water conservation also means that you do not have any drips or leaks anywhere in your home. It can be a bit time consuming to check everything, but every little bit counts. A simple drip in any of your sinks adds up to more wasted water than you may think. You can usually fix these cheaply, or even for free if a simple twist of a wrench fixes the problem. Check your basement and under sinks for small leaks that may be upping your water usage in your home.

You can save water by not pre-washing all of your dishes before you use the dishwasher. As long as your dishwasher is relatively new it should clean well without this pre-rinsing. Also set your dishwasher on air dry rather than heated dry so that you can save energy as well as water. Scrapping your dishes should do enough to make sure your dishes come out of the washer cleaner. Along the same lines, teach everyone to use less water when brushing their teeth by not leaving the water running while they are brushing. It uses gallons that could be saved.

Watch out for hoses that are left on, and don't run your water in the sink waiting for it to get hot to fill a pot to boil. Instead, heat the water from warm. It will take a little longer on the stove to heat up, but you will have saved a few gallons of water each time you do this. If you shave in the shower instead of at the sink with running water, you can save water that way as well. Think about all the ways that you use water and you can come up with other home water conservation tips that you can use each day.
